The Pushkar Festival
Every year in November thousands of Rajasthani tribal people converge in the picturesque town of Pushkar, which is also a major site for Hindu pilgrims. Perhaps the largest cattle fair in the world, it attracts more than a hundred thousand people, from all over Rajasthan and tourists from all over India and the world.
They come to buy and sell camels and other cattle and bathe at the Pushkar lake (considered sacred by Hindus). Considered to be one of the five most auspicious places of pilgrimage mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures, Pushkar has one of the only two temples dedicated to Lord Brahma – The Creator. The full moon night of the Kartika month is most auspicious as all of the 330 million Gods and Goddesses ( according to Hindu mythology) are present at Pushkar Lake. At this time devotees take a ritual dip in the holy waters of Lake and offer prayers at the Brahma temple – thus setting a backdrop for the cattle fair. There are the entertaining camel races, local circuses, local markets erupt selling camel saddles, textiles, glass bangles and silver jewelry. Thus all around there is a riot of color and smiling faces.
